Narrative
Saint Thomas, Stepney, Register of baptisms, P93/TMS, Item 003.
Although nothing is known of where she spent her childhood, it was not with her parents. In 1871 aged 23 yrs, Mercy was a Housemaid, one of 3 servants to a large house of an HM Customs Officer and his family, living out at Clifton Lodge, Streatham Hill, Streatham, Surrey.
Mercy was a marriage witness for George Glass and Lucy Butcher, 1871.
After her marriage to Walter, Mercy Hannah dropped the name Mercy and became simply Hannah Bowditch.
