By 1891, Samuels Grandfather, Frederick, was living in Stoke Newington, being an "Annuitant" in his 90's. An Annuitant was a receiver of an Annuity - An annuity is income paid to a beneficiary at regular intervals, for a fixed period or ascertainable period (usually the lifetime of a nominee) in return for a lump sum payment having been previously made into the scheme by a subscriber - i.e. a spouse, benefactor or employer, in this case probably his wealthy Grandson Samuel Benett Burt Thresher, the renowned London Wine Merchant, who had originally been a poor man.
NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership
heretofore subsisting between us, the undersigned
Oswald Thomas Norris, Walter Stanley Norris and
Samuel Benett Burt Thresher and Richard Dawnay
Martin-Bird carrying on business as Wine and
Spirit Merchants at 40 Eastcheap in the city of
London under the style or firm of PORTAL
DINGWALL & NORRIS has been dissolved by
mutual consent as from the thirty-first day of December 1936. All debts due and owing to or by the late firm will be respectively received and paid by the said Oswald Thomas Norris, Walter Stanley Norris and Samuel Benett Burt Thresher.�ưAs witness our hands this 8th day of January, 1937. That the Company be wound up voluntarily, and
that Mr. Samuel Benett Burt Thresher, of 40, Eastcheap, London, E.G., be and he is hereby appointed Liquidator for the purposes of such winding-up.
